My formal art training began with oils, so I have a special affinity for this medium. Initially I chose a deliberately impersonal style of paint application, with distinct areas of color and particular sharpness and clarity of form. Over time, I developed a more fluid style, where all that I've learned is a part of me, and I can more intuitively work with the subject and the materials.
Most recently, my approach has become more relaxed, with edges blurred, colors softened, and light infusing the composition rather than cast from a single spotlight. This approach results in a painterly, impressionistic style in which color, form, and brushwork combine to evoke a feeling of a place or object, rather than a pure representation.
