My formal art training began with oils, so I have a special affinity for this medium.  Here is where I learned to solve the problems of resolving something three-dimensional in just two dimensions, and how color can be used to represent highlights, midtones and shadows.

As I mastered the techniques and explored the medium further, I began to work with larger canvases, something for which oils are well-suited.  Initially I chose a deliberately impersonal style of paint application, with distinct areas of color and particular sharpness and clarity of form.  Over time, I developed a more fluid style, where all that I've learned is a part of me, and I can more intuitively work with the subject and the materials to create a work.

Most recently, my approach has become more relaxed, with edges blurred, colors softened, and light infusing the composition rather than cast from a single spotlight. This approach results in a painterly, impressionistic style in which color, form, and brushwork combine to evoke a feeling of a place or object, rather than a pure representation.
